In a recent government meeting, Alison Burrows, the Behavioral Health Department Director, addressed concerns regarding the Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System in response to a request from board members. Burrows reported on ongoing discussions with Cornerstone Behavioral Health and Recovery Services, emphasizing the department's commitment to ensuring residents in Tehachapi receive necessary behavioral health services. She noted that Kern BHRS will coordinate reassessments for individuals wishing to continue services with Cornerstone, while also maintaining oversight of existing providers to ensure quality care.
However, John Hickman, a representative from Cornerstone, raised significant concerns about the accessibility of substance use disorder treatment in Eastern Kern. He highlighted a recent case where a client faced a three-week wait for services at the only local facility, questioning the accuracy of information provided by the Kern BHRS hotline. Hickman criticized the prioritization of provider stability over community health needs, asserting that the current contracted provider has failed to meet timely care requirements.
Hickman, while advocating for equitable treatment for Eastern Kern residents, submitted an email trail indicating that more than one contract could be issued in the area, suggesting potential solutions to the ongoing service gaps. The meeting concluded with a motion to receive and file the report, which was unanimously approved by the board.
