In a recent Wilmington City Council meeting, two significant ordinances concerning firearm regulations were discussed, reflecting a collaborative effort with Newcastle County to enhance public safety.
The first ordinance, numbered 24-041, aims to amend the city code to implement stricter security measures for firearms retail stores. Sponsored by Councilman Darby, the ordinance requires new gun stores to demonstrate enhanced security systems, including video surveillance and alarm systems, as part of their permit applications. This initiative follows similar legislation passed by Newcastle County, which aims to prevent gun thefts and ensure that gun stores maintain adequate security. The ordinance is not retroactive, meaning existing stores will not be required to comply unless they undergo major renovations.
Charani Pedibanda, General Manager of the Newcastle County Department of Land Use, emphasized the importance of uniform regulations across municipalities to avoid the concentration of gun stores in areas with less stringent laws. The ordinance is set for a vote on October 3rd.
The second ordinance, 24-042, seeks to prohibit firearms, ammunition, and explosives in city buildings and police stations. This legislation is described as a cleanup measure to align with existing laws and was also unanimously passed by the county council. Council members expressed support for the ordinance, noting its importance for maintaining safety in public facilities.
Both ordinances reflect a growing trend towards stricter gun control measures in response to community safety concerns. The council is expected to finalize these regulations in the upcoming vote, reinforcing the city's commitment to public safety and responsible gun ownership.
