During a recent government meeting, the board adopted Model Policy 648, focusing on health and wellness in schools. This new policy, introduced by board counsel Jill Helenka, is a response to recent legislative changes and imposes restrictions on school districts regarding sex education curricula. Specifically, it prohibits any provider of abortion from supplying materials or instruction related to sex education.
Additionally, the policy mandates that sex education programs must include information on adoption practices and the Idaho Safe Haven Act. Although the policy was reviewed by various stakeholders, including school nurses and social workers, it was deemed outside the scope of the wellness committee, which did not participate in its review.
The motion to adopt the policy was moved and seconded, followed by a unanimous vote in favor, signaling strong support from the board members. Following the adoption, the meeting transitioned to the information agenda, where Superintendent Fowdy was invited to present his report.
