During a recent city council meeting in Paramount, several significant proclamations and recognitions were presented, highlighting community efforts and awareness initiatives.

The meeting began with heartfelt remarks from a long-serving council member, who expressed gratitude for the support of family and the community over his 18-year tenure. He acknowledged the invaluable lessons learned about city governance and expressed hope for a future return to public service.

The council then shifted focus to a pressing social issue: domestic violence. Representatives from Su Casa, an organization dedicated to supporting victims, accepted a proclamation recognizing October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. They reported a troubling increase in domestic violence incidents, now affecting 24 individuals per minute in the U.S. Su Casa emphasized their commitment to providing resources and education to the community.

Next, the council recognized October as National Physical Therapy Month, honoring California Orthopedic Therapy and Wellness Center, known as Pools of Hope. The center provides therapeutic aquatic programs that aid in rehabilitation and wellness, particularly for those needing low-impact exercise.

The meeting also acknowledged National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with a proclamation presented to Dorothee Sekiwa, a breast cancer survivor. Sekiwa expressed gratitude for her health and the support from her community and the Musa organization, which aids women in personal development and health.

Additionally, the council celebrated National Red Ribbon Week, promoting a drug-free lifestyle among students. TUSD Board President Eddie Cruz highlighted the importance of community partnerships in keeping youth informed about the dangers of drug use.

Lastly, the city presented the Good Corporate Citizen Award to several local companies, including Aniplex Corporation and Mira Khan Vinegar, for their commitment to environmental responsibility in wastewater management. These companies were recognized for their efforts in maintaining clean waterways and reducing pollution.
