City plans major apartment development amid community concerns

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around a proposed development project on Assembly Road, which aims to transform a currently underutilized area into a residential complex with additional commercial space. The project, spearheaded by a developer known for previous successful apartment projects, envisions the construction of approximately 199 residential units, alongside designated parking areas.

The developer highlighted the unique topography of the site, noting its elevation relative to surrounding structures, including a U-Haul facility across the street. The proposal includes a single-story structure on the west side of Assembly, with plans to expand vertically, taking advantage of zoning regulations that allow for greater height in the General Commercial (GC) zone compared to the Community Business (CB) zone.

City officials expressed support for the GC zoning designation, emphasizing its potential to optimize development and enhance the area's overall appeal. The developer also addressed concerns regarding the transition of building heights in relation to lower-density zones, assuring that performance standards would be adhered to, ensuring a smooth integration into the existing neighborhood.

Erin Mitchell, a resident of a nearby apartment complex, noted the need for improved sidewalks to facilitate access for individuals with mobility challenges.
