In a recent Tangipahoa Parish council meeting, community concerns were raised regarding a proposed Type 3 solid waste facility by LNB Dump Site LLC, located on Gas Line Road in Independence, Louisiana. The council is currently in the process of ratifying a resolution that would allow the permitting of this facility, which has sparked significant opposition from local residents.
Jeff Sanders, representing Edwards Properties, voiced strong objections, citing potential devaluation of property and concerns over the condition of Gas Line Road, which is currently a gravel road. He emphasized that inadequate road infrastructure could negatively impact access to timberland, ultimately affecting its value.
Robert Harrison, another resident, expressed frustration over the council's decisions, linking the proposed landfill to ongoing environmental issues in the area, including pollution from gravel pits. He questioned the council's oversight regarding hazardous materials, such as asbestos, and criticized perceived inconsistencies in enforcement of local regulations, particularly regarding burn bans.
The meeting highlighted a growing discontent among residents who feel their concerns are not being adequately addressed by their elected representatives. As the council moves forward with the permitting process, the community remains vigilant, advocating for their interests and environmental safety.
