In a recent government meeting, officials discussed several key initiatives aimed at enhancing community safety and environmental management. A proclamation was signed to raise awareness about railroad safety among citizens, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in areas near train tracks.
The council also approved the purchase of three floating surface mechanical aerators for the landfill oxidation pond, with a total cost of $121,729.83. This expenditure was confirmed to be within the landfill's budget. The decision followed the receipt of a single bid from Aqua Aerobic Systems, and the motion received unanimous support from council members.
In addition, the council addressed the maintenance of blighted properties, with a focus on grass cutting. A contractor was approved to manage grass cutting at a specific location in Hammond, with plans to lien the property for the associated costs. This initiative is part of a broader effort that has seen the blighted property group tackle 100 properties, with 92 owners voluntarily cleaning up their lots. Only eight properties required contracts for cleanup.
The meeting also highlighted the financial commitment to community upkeep, with over $2.5 million allocated to programs related to blighted property management, litter abatement, grass cutting, and animal control. This investment reflects the council's ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life for residents and maintain the aesthetic integrity of the community.
