In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the progress of two significant trail projects in Mount Pleasant, receiving strong community support for both initiatives. The Mathis Ferry Trail project garnered 61% approval from 174 survey responses, with 29% opposed and 10% undecided. Following a public meeting, additional residents expressed their support, highlighting concerns about safety, drainage, and tree protection as key feedback points.
Officials noted that 19 letters of support were received for the Mathis Ferry Trail, with no opposition. The project aims to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists, incorporating design techniques such as boardwalks and pervious pavement to address drainage issues and protect existing trees. The town plans to take on maintenance responsibilities for the trail, which is expected to improve connectivity and accessibility in the area.
The second project, the Vennings Trail segment, is proposed to connect Mathis Ferry Road to Rifle Range Road. This segment has received even stronger backing, with 87% of 39 survey respondents in favor. The project will replace existing sidewalks and improve pedestrian safety through enhanced lighting and physical barriers. The estimated cost for the Vennings Trail is $454,000 in green belt funds, with an additional $980,000 allocated for design through the town's capital improvement plan.
Both projects reflect the town's commitment to improving infrastructure and community connectivity, with officials emphasizing the importance of public engagement in the planning process. The meetings concluded with motions to approve both trail projects, which were met with unanimous support from the council.
