During a recent public meeting, officials presented the Hap Road Corridor project, outlining its history, proposed improvements, and community engagement efforts. The project, which has been in development since 2016, aims to enhance traffic flow and safety in the area, particularly at the intersection of Hap and Orchard Roads.
Jared, a representative from Patrick Engineering, detailed the project's progression, emphasizing the extensive stakeholder coordination that informed the design process. The village collaborated with Cook County and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to ensure compliance with federal funding requirements, which necessitated approvals from multiple entities.
A key feature of the proposed improvements is the introduction of a roundabout at the Hap and Orchard intersection. This design aims to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety, streamline traffic flow, and create a more inviting civic space. The concept emerged from community input gathered during a walkability workshop in 2006 and has been integrated into the village's 2040 vision plan.
The project is being executed in phases, with Phase 1—focused on preliminary engineering and environmental studies—completed in 2021. Phase 2, which involves final design plans and land acquisition, is expected to conclude in 2025, followed by construction slated for 2026.
Throughout the development process, the project team has prioritized public engagement, holding multiple meetings and utilizing a dedicated project website to keep residents informed. The steering committee, which included village officials, local business owners, and community members, played a crucial role in shaping the project’s goals and recommendations.
As the meeting concluded, attendees were invited to ask questions and provide feedback, underscoring the village's commitment to transparency and community involvement in the planning process.
