City of Orlando approves record budget for public safety initiatives

The City of Orlando has officially adopted its annual budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025, totaling approximately $1.82 billion. The budget was presented during a recent city council meeting, where Commissioner Stewart made the motion for approval, seconded by Mr. Rose Martin.

CFO Michelle McCrimmon highlighted that the budget reflects only minor changes from the preliminary draft shared during a July workshop. The general fund budget now stands at $708.57 million, which is an increase of $772,000 compared to the earlier proposal. The overall budget increase of $1.4 million is attributed to adjustments in water reclamation capital projects and a decrease in the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) operating budget.

The revised budget also includes increased revenue from police fees, following a new agreement with Orange County Public Schools regarding reimbursements for school resource officers. This additional revenue has allowed for the hiring of new positions in various departments, including parks and recreation, the Orlando Police Department, and executive offices.

Public comments during the meeting reflected community concerns regarding affordability and safety. Resident Trini Quiroz emphasized the need for affordable housing, expressing that high rental costs are straining residents. He urged city officials to prioritize the needs of working-class citizens in budget allocations.

Another resident, Simone Carassa, voiced support for the budget, particularly the proposal to add two vehicle-for-hire enforcement officers at Orlando International Airport. Carassa argued that increased enforcement is necessary to regulate transportation services and enhance public safety, especially in light of evolving tactics used by unauthorized transport operators.

The budget details have been made available on the city’s website, ensuring transparency and public access to the financial planning of the city. The council's commitment to addressing community needs while managing a substantial budget reflects ongoing efforts to balance growth and public welfare in Orlando.
