In a recent public hearing held by the Pelham City Council, residents gathered to discuss a proposed zoning change for a property located at 694 Shelby County Highway 35. The current zoning classification of R1 (residential) is being considered for a change to A1 (agricultural) to accommodate the plans of property owners Shannon and Stacy Humphrey, who intend to build their family home and maintain a small garden.
The Humphreys, who purchased the 3.78-acre mostly wooded lot, expressed their desire for more flexibility in land use, emphasizing that they do not plan to raise livestock or sell produce but wish to retain the option for future gardening endeavors. The Planning Commission had previously reviewed the request and unanimously recommended approval.

One resident, Buzzby, shared his own experience of successfully rezoning his property and advocated for the Humphreys' request.
However, concerns were raised by some attendees regarding the implications of the A1 designation, particularly the potential for livestock on the property. Jill Green, a local resident, questioned whether restrictions could be placed on livestock despite the owners' assurances that they would not keep any. City officials clarified that while the A1 zoning allows for livestock, the Humphreys have committed to not having any.
The public hearing concluded without further opposition, and the council is expected to deliberate on the ordinance in upcoming meetings. The outcome of this zoning change could set a precedent for similar requests in the area, reflecting the community's evolving needs and land use preferences.
