In a recent city council meeting, the Pelham Planning Commission unanimously recommended the rezoning of a 3.8-acre property located at 694 Highway 35 from R1 (single-family residential) to A1 (agricultural). The request, initiated by Shannon Humphrey, aims to allow for the construction of a family home with the potential for a small garden, although the applicants clarified they do not intend to sell produce or keep livestock.
During the public hearing, Humphrey expressed his desire for flexibility in land use, emphasizing that he and his wife aim to maintain a peaceful relationship with their neighbors. He reassured the council that they have no plans for farming activities or livestock, despite the A1 designation allowing for such uses.
Community members voiced their support, highlighting the improvements made to the previously unsightly property. One resident, Buzzby, shared his own positive experience with a similar rezoning, advocating for the approval of Humphrey's request.
However, some concerns were raised regarding the potential for livestock on the property. Jill Green, a local resident, questioned whether future owners could introduce livestock despite the current owner's intentions. City officials clarified that while the A1 zoning permits livestock, the property owner has committed to not keeping any.
The council concluded the public hearing without opposition, indicating a favorable outlook for the rezoning request, which will now move forward for final approval.
