In a recent meeting, Casey Middle School officials unveiled an innovative initiative aimed at celebrating student achievements beyond academics. The KC Character Wall, a collaborative project involving students, teachers, and custodial staff, was introduced to recognize students for their character, attitude, service, empathy, and willingness to embrace new opportunities.
Principal Dr. Sal Corella expressed pride in the teamwork that brought the project to fruition, highlighting the role of the Casey Coalition Club, led by adviser Andrea Haber. The students envisioned a platform to showcase their peers' contributions, which led to the creation of a visually striking student spotlight board in the school's main hallway.
The spotlight board emphasizes the importance of character traits such as leadership and service, aiming to foster a sense of community and engagement among students. Corella noted that the initiative is designed to encourage students to take pride in their unique skills and contributions, which often go unnoticed in traditional grading systems.
Students actively participated in the design and construction of the board, collaborating with technology and engineering teachers Adam Zabrzecki and Jeff Addison, as well as head custodian Don Brenner. This hands-on experience not only allowed students to apply their engineering skills but also taught them valuable lessons in teamwork and problem-solving.
The KC Character Wall will feature different students each week, reinforcing the school's commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals. The initiative aims to instill in students the understanding that the attributes recognized on the board can guide them throughout their lives, ultimately contributing to their personal and academic growth.
