During a recent government meeting, officials provided an extensive overview of the airport capital improvement program, highlighting both completed projects and future initiatives aimed at enhancing airport facilities and safety.
Key completed projects include the construction of a new five-position aircraft remote heavy pad, which is currently utilized by airline partners for overnight aircraft parking. Additionally, the rehabilitation of the Charlie Mike taxiway has eliminated previously identified \"hot spots,\" improving safety for pilots navigating the airfield. The installation of electric preconditioned air units at all jet bridges in Concourse A has significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions by replacing diesel-powered units.
Other notable improvements include the construction of a covered pedestrian walkway from the economy parking lot, the completion of a new rental car quick turnaround facility featuring environmental sustainability measures, and the removal of an obsolete passenger loading dock at gate B2. These upgrades are designed to accommodate larger aircraft and enhance passenger experience.
Looking ahead, the airport plans to undertake several significant projects, including wetland mitigation to reduce wildlife hazards near the runway and the replacement of an outdated rotating beacon with LED technology. A new airfield storage facility is also in the design phase to house maintenance equipment currently stored outdoors.
The meeting also addressed a reconfirmed passenger demand forecast, projecting a 54% increase in passenger traffic by 2037, necessitating terminal renovations and expansions. The airport is pursuing federal grants to fund these projects, including a $21.5 million expansion of Concourse A and a $62 million upgrade to the outbound baggage system, which aims to meet current TSA requirements.
Officials emphasized the importance of these improvements for accommodating future passenger growth and enhancing operational efficiency. Additional work sessions will be scheduled to keep the council updated on the expansion plans and financial considerations.
