In a recent government meeting, the Stearns County Board addressed a request from Jamie and Kim Garrids of Albany to construct a feedlot structure closer to the property line than typically permitted. The proposal seeks to build a 56-foot by 128-foot cattle shed just 15 feet from the property line, despite the existing ordinance requiring a 50-foot setback for feedlots with more than 10 animal units.
The Garrids' property, located at 20204 400 and 35th Street, spans 13.21 acres and is currently registered for 99 animal units, which includes 93 slaughter steers and heifers, along with 30 beef calves. The board noted that a previous feedlot structure on the site has already been eliminated to make way for a new residential dwelling.
During the meeting, board members confirmed their site visits and discussed the surrounding properties, including a neighboring parcel owned by Wernard and Mildred Garrett, which does not have additional building entitlements. The area is zoned for agricultural use, and the board highlighted that the neighboring parcels also have registered feedlots.
Environmental staff conducted a compliance inspection on July 26, 2024, and found the site to be compliant with state regulations. Notifications regarding the request were sent to nearby property owners and local entities, ensuring community awareness of the proposed changes. The board will continue to evaluate the request in light of the existing zoning ordinances and community impact.
