During a recent government meeting, officials from Sawyer County discussed the pressing need for improved ambulance services in the northern region, particularly in the towns of Round Lake and Spire Lake. Town of Round Lake Supervisor addressed the board, highlighting the slow response times for emergency medical services in the area. He noted that a request had been made months ago to explore the establishment of a staffed ambulance station, but there has been little progress since then.
The Supervisor emphasized the importance of this initiative, citing an increase in outdoor activities and an aging population that necessitates faster emergency response. He mentioned that the town has offered up to 10 acres of land for the potential facility and urged the board to prioritize this issue in upcoming budget discussions, especially given the influx of tourist revenue in the county.
Mike Felder, a long-time member of the Round Lake Fire Department, supported the Supervisor's call for action. He recounted past efforts to establish ambulance services in the area, noting that a committee had previously recommended three stations, including one in Round Lake. Felder shared a recent incident involving a 92-year-old man who required urgent medical attention, illustrating the challenges posed by long response times and the reliance on volunteer firefighters in emergencies.
Both speakers underscored the critical need for a dedicated ambulance service to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in the northern part of Sawyer County. They urged the board to place this issue on the agenda for further discussion and action.
