Freda Tefford, chair of the City of Erie Environmental Advisory Council (EAC), presented an overview of the council's objectives and current initiatives during a recent government meeting. Established under city ordinance, the EAC aims to address environmental issues by proposing solutions to city officials and engaging with the public.
Tefford highlighted that the EAC is one of 167 such councils across Pennsylvania, with its first meeting held on November 29, 2023. The council meets monthly and is accessible to the public via Facebook and YouTube. Its primary responsibilities include identifying environmental problems, recommending plans, and advising local government agencies on land use and environmental protection.

The climate action plan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change, with the council collaborating with Penn State University to complete a greenhouse gas inventory. Tefford noted that the inventory is incomplete due to missing data but emphasized the importance of this initial step in formulating a comprehensive climate strategy.
Additionally, the EAC is exploring initiatives such as portable water stations for public events and a citywide reusable food waste program. Tefford encouraged community engagement, stating that public comment periods are available during meetings, and expressed a commitment to ensuring robust opportunities for public input as the climate action plan develops.
The next EAC meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday at 3 PM, where community members are invited to participate and share their insights.
