In a recent government meeting, Lane County officials provided a comprehensive update on the upcoming elections and ongoing administrative initiatives. County Clerk Dina Dawson reported that absentee ballots have been available since September 23, with approximately 35 ballots issued daily. Voters can cast their votes in person or return their ballots via a drop box or through the U.S. Postal Service.
A significant focus of the meeting was the Blue River recall election, which involves two candidates from the Blue River Water and Sanitation District and two from the Blue River Park and Recreation District. The election office confirmed that the necessary signatures for the recall were verified as sufficient, and one board member has already resigned.
Key deadlines were highlighted, including the registration deadline for first-time voters on October 15, and the opening of 21 ballot boxes across the county on October 17. A ballot return dashboard will go live on October 25, with ballot counting commencing on October 28.
Additionally, the meeting addressed concerns regarding potential non-citizen voter registrations. Lane County has identified 64 individuals mistakenly registered to vote through the DMV, prompting the governor and secretary of state to call for an independent audit of the motor voter process. The DMV has been directed to pause the transmission of voter data until the review is complete.
Beyond election matters, the board is also working on updating its strategic plan, aiming to define priorities and goals for the next two years. The chair and vice chair will assist in selecting a consultant to facilitate this process, emphasizing the board's commitment to addressing community needs and achieving consensus on key initiatives.
The meeting concluded with a reminder for residents to check their voter registration status ahead of the upcoming deadlines.
