In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the ongoing efforts to address substance use among vulnerable populations. The majority of patients served by the program are male, aged 18 to 39, and predominantly identify as Black or American Indian.
As of June 12, healthcare providers participating in the First Step initiative have begun administering an extended-release buprenorphine formulation, designed to assist patients transitioning to a monthly injectable option known as SUBLOCADE or BRICSATI. This new approach aims to enhance treatment accessibility and effectiveness for individuals battling substance use disorders.
Additionally, the program has successfully trained 16 substance use navigators who are now available during all emergency department shifts, providing crucial support to patients in need.
The meeting also highlighted significant budgetary changes, with a projected drop in funding from over 2.2 million in 2025 to just over 1 million in 2026, raising concerns about the sustainability of these vital health services.
