Corpus Christi celebrates Hispanic Heritage with Conquer the Coast event

The City Council meeting in Corpus Christi on September 17, 2024, highlighted significant community events and initiatives, including the proclamation of National Hispanic Heritage Month and the upcoming Conquer the Coast bike event.

Mayor Paulette Guajardo opened the meeting by proclaiming September 15 through October 15, 2024, as National Hispanic Heritage Month in Corpus Christi. The council then shifted focus to the Conquer the Coast event, a premier athletic gathering that attracts over 1,000 cyclists from across Texas and beyond. Al Arriola, President and CEO of the United Chamber of Commerce, introduced the event, which marks its 22nd annual occurrence. This year’s ride is particularly notable as it will be the last to cross the existing harbor bridge before its anticipated demolition, making it a nostalgic occasion for participants.

Sam Longoria, chair of the Conquer the Coast Committee, expressed gratitude to the community and city departments for their support in organizing the event. He highlighted the economic benefits it brings to Corpus Christi, as visitors will patronize local hotels and restaurants. Longoria also noted that proceeds from the event support educational initiatives, including scholarships for student-athletes and providing bicycles to children in need.

The meeting concluded with council members discussing the event's logistics and its positive impact on the community, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that makes such events successful.
