During a recent government meeting, city officials outlined a collaborative project involving the Boys and Girls Club of the Coastal Plains, the American Red Cross, and Sound Rivers, aimed at enhancing community resources and infrastructure in Greenville. The initiative is part of a grant application process characterized by a rolling review, which necessitates swift action to secure funding before resources are depleted.
The project encompasses several key components, including the construction of a distribution warehouse and gymnasium at Greenfield Terrace Park. This facility will serve dual purposes: as a permanent storage site for the Red Cross and as a community gymnasium for recreational activities. The design includes features such as solar EV charging stations and a truck rodeo area for disaster response, emphasizing the importance of community preparedness in light of recent natural disasters in Western North Carolina.
Additionally, the project plans to develop wetlands and walking trails at Greenfield Terrace, which will provide flood management and educational opportunities while connecting local neighborhoods to the park system. The Boys and Girls Club will also undergo retrofitting to improve energy efficiency, including the installation of new HVAC systems and solar panels, which are projected to significantly reduce the facility's carbon footprint and operational costs.
The total estimated budget for the project is approximately $21 million, with a request for $20 million from the grant and an additional $1 million from the stormwater utility for wetland development. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expected to award funding to around 150 projects, with Greenville's application submitted in a timely manner to capitalize on available resources.
City officials expressed optimism about the project's potential to enhance community resilience and provide vital services, particularly in emergency situations. The collaboration aims not only to improve infrastructure but also to foster community engagement and educational opportunities for local youth.
