City expands homeless outreach program to combat rising crisis

In a recent city council meeting, officials discussed the ongoing efforts and funding for the homeless outreach program, which has become increasingly vital in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program, administered by the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope, aims to assist unhoused individuals by providing essential services such as transportation, day shelter, and referrals to social service agencies.

The council approved an amended service agreement allocating $160,000 to the outreach program, which has already shown promising results. In fiscal year 2025, the program has assisted 128 individuals, while in fiscal year 2024, it helped 279 residents, with 32 finding shelter at Camp Hope and 34 securing permanent housing.

Nicole Martinez, director of the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope, highlighted the program's collaborative approach, working closely with local law enforcement and community organizations to reach those in need. The outreach team, consisting of four dedicated members, engages with individuals in various locations, providing immediate assistance and connecting them to necessary resources.

Council members expressed concerns about the rising number of unhoused individuals in the city, attributing the increase to factors such as rising rents and low vacancy rates. Martinez confirmed that while the number of people seeking help has grown, the outreach program has expanded its capacity to assist them, thanks to recent funding boosts and the establishment of the outreach team.

The discussion also touched on the future of Camp Hope, a temporary shelter that has been a crucial resource for many. While some council members suggested exploring alternative housing solutions, such as mobile units, Martinez emphasized the importance of Camp Hope as a safe and supportive environment for those experiencing homelessness.
