In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the progress of a new bicycle parking facility being constructed between the CenturyLink building and the Orpheum. The project, which is expected to be completed by October 18, 2024, will provide space for 12 to 24 bicycles, depending on how they are parked. The construction is currently underway, and the sidewalk in the area remains closed during this period.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance bike parking in the city, prompted by a historical trend of bicycles being hung in trees due to a lack of designated parking. CenturyLink has granted a license agreement for the use of two parking spaces to facilitate this project, which is being funded entirely by beautification funds.
The design includes hoop-style bike racks that allow for parking on both sides, although the ideal spacing for optimal use is not fully achievable. Officials acknowledged the challenges of accommodating various types of bicycles, including heavier models like e-bikes, and discussed alternatives such as wall-mounted racks, though these were deemed less favorable.
The meeting highlighted the collaborative effort between city officials and CenturyLink, with a focus on improving urban infrastructure for cyclists. The project aims to alleviate past issues of obstructed sidewalks and enhance the overall aesthetic of the area. Further discussions included updates on additional grant programs aimed at improving last-mile connectivity for cyclists.
