In a recent meeting, the Rock County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution to join the Wisconsin Local Government Climate Coalition (WLGCC). This decision aligns with the county's ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, which began in 2018 with the adoption of energy conservation goals and was further strengthened in 2021 with a resolution to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Supervisor Sutherland highlighted the pressing concerns regarding climate change, noting its potential impacts on flooding, extreme weather, air quality, and public infrastructure. The resolution emphasizes the importance of local governments in addressing these challenges and contributing to the state of Wisconsin's goal of 100% carbon-free electricity by 2050.

The WLGCC, which includes various local governments such as Eau Claire and La Crosse, aims to facilitate collaboration among its members to overcome barriers to decarbonization and promote clean energy solutions. Notably, membership in the coalition does not require any financial contributions from the participating governments, providing access to valuable resources, including training and software, at no cost.

As part of the resolution, Rock County will designate a representative from the Environmental Management System Committee to engage with WLGCC activities, further solidifying its commitment to environmental stewardship and collaborative climate action.
