Florida Declares October Native Plant Month to Boost Conservation

During a recent meeting of the Lake County Board of Commissioners, significant discussions highlighted the importance of youth leadership and environmental conservation. The meeting commenced with a commendation for the 4-H program, emphasizing its role in developing future leaders. Participants were encouraged to support youth involvement, reinforcing the idea that young voices are vital for community growth.

Commissioner Parks took the opportunity to read a proclamation declaring October 2020 as Florida Native Plant Month in Lake County. This proclamation recognized the Florida Native Plant Society, which has been active since 1980, and its mission to preserve and restore Florida's native plant communities. The society, comprising 33 chapters and 6,000 members statewide, engages in various activities, including public workshops and conservation projects.

The proclamation also acknowledged Lake County's rich biodiversity, noting the presence of several endemic plant species. Commissioner Parks expressed gratitude for the efforts of local chapters, such as the Lake Beauty Berry and Passionflower chapters, in promoting native plants through education and community activities.

Nidi Villalobospell and Melanie Simon, representatives from the North and South Lake County chapters, respectively, shared upcoming events for October, including a native plant sale, educational field trips, and invasive plant removal initiatives. They expressed appreciation for the county's recognition of Florida Native Plant Month, highlighting the importance of community involvement in environmental stewardship.
