During a recent government meeting, Sacramento Mayor and Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted significant efforts to address homelessness in North Sacramento, particularly along the Northern Bikeway, which has been impacted by tent encampments. Mayor emphasized the suffering of both the individuals living in these encampments and the broader community, which has seen the bikeway rendered unusable.
To combat this issue, the city has initiated cleanup efforts and established a facility on Roseville Road, which currently houses 100 trailer and pallet homes. With the support of a $12 million grant, the city plans to double the capacity of this facility and provide an additional $6 million to assist another 100 individuals in transitioning to permanent housing.
Mayor praised Governor Newsom for his commitment to tackling homelessness, stating that the governor's funding initiatives demonstrate that homelessness can be addressed effectively. He referenced Proposition 1, which allocates $1 billion for mental health services and housing support, as a crucial component of the strategy to reduce homelessness in Sacramento.
As the mayor prepares to exit public office, he expressed pride in the collaborative efforts made with the governor and emphasized the ongoing need for action to improve conditions for those living on the streets. Governor Newsom echoed these sentiments, commending local leaders for their dedication and the tangible results achieved through partnerships at various government levels. The meeting underscored a shared commitment to addressing the homelessness crisis in California through comprehensive strategies and accountability.
