The association is seeking over $1 million, with $300,000 earmarked for minor improvements. Dr. Melody Dover, president of the association, underscored the park's historical significance, noting its role in the community for over 96 years, including hosting the first school in Red Top.

Dover detailed the park's importance to the community's identity and history, linking it to the legacy of the Rosenwald Schools, which were established to provide education to African American children in rural areas. She emphasized the need for the park to remain a community asset, free from commercial development.

However, concerns were raised regarding the lack of a formal appraisal for the property and the ongoing lease with the Charleston County School District, which currently owns the land. The committee members expressed the need for more information, including confirmation of the school district's willingness to sell the property and a formal appraisal to justify the proposed purchase price.

The committee ultimately decided to defer the decision on the funding request until further information could be gathered, including an appraisal and clarity on the school district's intentions. The next opportunity for the association to present their case will be in the upcoming cycle, with the possibility of a special meeting if necessary.
