Housing Development Plan Promises 100 Percent Affordable Units

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the progress and future phases of a significant housing development project, emphasizing the importance of affordable housing and community engagement. The project, which has been on hold, is set to move forward with the design of three buildings in the blue zone, allowing for a streamlined process once construction resumes.

Key details revealed include the submission of phase applications that outline unit counts and square footage, adhering to requirements established in the Disposition and Development Agreement (DDA). This agreement includes a map of below-market-rate (BMR) standalone blocks, ensuring clarity on affordable housing commitments throughout the project's phases.

The Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure (OCII) highlighted that the first phase of infrastructure construction is anticipated to begin in late 2025 or early 2026, with a commitment to expedite the approval of necessary permits. The initial phase will include 175 units of housing, with a focus on affordability, while subsequent phases are projected to introduce an additional 800 units.

OCII's executive director emphasized the importance of community communication, noting that public hearings and ongoing updates will keep residents informed about the project's progress. The meeting also addressed the Certificate of Preference (COP) program, which prioritizes housing access for individuals displaced by previous redevelopment efforts. This program ensures that those eligible have first choice in affordable housing units across the city.
