During a recent Arlington school committee meeting, community members voiced concerns regarding the district's strategic plan, particularly its impact on students with disabilities. Cheryl Miller, an autistic adult and parent of two special education students, expressed her disappointment with the lack of progress in implementing the strategic plan since her initial engagement with it two years ago. Miller recounted her struggles with the Arlington Public Schools (APS), stating that her daughter had been failed by the system, leading to her decision to homeschool. Despite her hopes for change after attending a session led by Dr. Homan, Miller claimed that no substantial improvements had been made, resulting in lasting harm to her family.
Miller urged the school committee to hold Dr. Homan accountable for not ensuring that the values of the strategic plan were upheld for all students, particularly those with disabilities. She emphasized the structural disadvantages faced by parents of students with disabilities, highlighting the need for genuine accountability within the school system.

The meeting also featured introductions of new administrative hires, including assistant superintendents and directors for various subjects. Dr. Homan acknowledged the excitement surrounding the implementation of the strategic plan and the commitment of new leaders to support the district's educational goals.
As the meeting concluded, the school committee faced pressing issues regarding the execution of its strategic plan and the timely completion of essential facilities, reflecting the community's desire for accountability and progress in Arlington's educational landscape.
