During a recent government meeting, officials reported that the department is currently short on bus drivers due to unexpected medical leaves and resignations, which have strained resources and led to delays in service.

At the start of the school year, the transportation department was fully staffed, with five substitute drivers available. However, between August 16 and August 23, five drivers went on medical leave, and by August 30, one driver retired while another transitioned to a different role within the district. In response, the district has posted three additional bus operator positions and is actively recruiting more drivers, including hosting a \"Drive the Bus\" event on September 21 to encourage community participation.

The sudden resignation of the transportation supervisor on the second day of school has compounded these issues, resulting in a loss of critical operational knowledge. In the absence of a dedicated supervisor, district administrators have stepped in to manage transportation operations, including addressing over 600 bus stop change requests submitted by parents. The team has been working diligently to assess safety and efficiency in bus routing, although they have noted that not all requests can be accommodated due to driver availability and tight scheduling.

Additionally, the district is addressing long route times for non-public school transportation, which were exacerbated by a sudden increase in student enrollment from eight to 79 for one parochial school. Adjustments are being made to improve these routes, and the district is hopeful that hiring additional drivers will alleviate some of the current challenges.

Officials expressed gratitude for the hard work of the administrative team and bus drivers in navigating these difficulties. They also acknowledged the importance of timely communication with parents regarding bus schedules, noting improvements in notifications about delays.
