Parents demand urgent reforms for special needs education

During a recent Saint Mary's County Public Schools Board meeting, significant concerns were raised regarding the treatment of students with special needs, particularly focusing on the case of Janelle, a student with Rett syndrome. Her father, Tonghyun Chirum, expressed deep frustration over the lack of adequate support and preparation for special needs students, highlighting systemic failures that have prevented Janelle from starting school on time for several years.

Chirum detailed his efforts to secure a private duty nurse for Janelle, which he began preparing for in June. However, just one day before the school year commenced, he was informed that the nurse could not attend due to a licensing issue. He criticized the school system for not proactively addressing these needs during the summer months, which he believes has led to unnecessary delays and emotional distress for families.

In addition to the staffing issues, Chirum called for improvements in the physical education facilities available to students with severe disabilities, arguing that Janelle should have access to appropriate therapy and equipment to participate in physical activities alongside her peers. He urged the board to evaluate the current environment and resources allocated for special needs students, advocating for a more inclusive and supportive educational framework.

Another speaker emphasized the importance of maintaining a nonpartisan approach within the Board of Education, citing policies that prohibit partisan influence in schools. This speaker expressed concern over recent behaviors that could undermine the integrity of the electoral process and the educational system, urging board members to uphold their constitutional duties and avoid any actions that could compromise the trust placed in them by the community.

The discussions highlighted a pressing need for the board to address the challenges faced by special needs students and to reinforce the principles of impartiality and integrity within the educational governance structure.
