In a bustling Milwaukee City Hall, the Zoning, Neighborhoods, and Development Committee convened to address pressing issues surrounding public safety and the nighttime economy. The meeting, held on December 10, 2024, highlighted the collaborative efforts between local businesses, the Milwaukee Downtown Business Improvement District (BID), and the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) to enhance safety in the city’s entertainment districts.
Matt Doner, the economic development director for Milwaukee Downtown BID, emphasized the importance of a vibrant nighttime economy, noting that businesses in food, beverage, and entertainment sectors represent the fourth largest category of jobs in the city. He pointed out that the city does not simply shut down after 5 PM; rather, the nightlife contributes significantly to Milwaukee's economic landscape. “Having very safe entertainment districts is critically important,” he stated, underscoring the need for a secure environment that attracts both residents and visitors.
The committee discussed the ongoing initiatives to bolster safety, including the deployment of additional security measures funded by the BID. Since January 2019, over $600,000 has been invested in security services, which include a dedicated security team that works closely with MPD to address low-level offenses that may not warrant immediate police response. This proactive approach aims to create a safer atmosphere for patrons enjoying the city’s nightlife.
Alderman Chambers and other committee members expressed support for these initiatives, recognizing the necessity of maintaining open communication among stakeholders. They encouraged further exploration of partnerships to enhance safety measures and improve the overall experience in Milwaukee’s entertainment districts.
The conversation also touched on the need for data collection to assess the effectiveness of these safety measures and to determine if other areas of the city could benefit from similar initiatives. The committee requested information on the history and funding of the current safety programs, as well as an economic study to better understand the impact of the nighttime economy.
As the meeting concluded, the committee members left with a sense of purpose, committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment that supports Milwaukee’s vibrant nightlife and economic growth. The collaborative spirit displayed during the discussions signals a promising future for the city’s neighborhoods, where safety and sociability go hand in hand.
