In a recent government meeting, Churchill County officials, alongside representatives from the city of Fallon and the Churchill County School District, announced a joint proclamation declaring September 2024 as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month. This initiative comes in response to a troubling rise in both youth and adult suicides within the community.
Shannon Ernst from Churchill County Social Services highlighted the urgent need for action, noting that the county has been actively developing a suicide prevention and behavioral health intercept model since March. The plan aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and encourage individuals to seek help without shame. Community engagement has been a key component, with various professionals contributing insights into the community's needs.
The proclamation will be accompanied by a series of awareness activities, including a ceremonial dying of the fountain on Main Street on September 9, where community members will be invited to speak on behalf of the organizations involved. Additionally, residents are encouraged to wear purple on Fridays throughout the month to show support.
A media campaign is set to launch, focusing on educating the public about the signs of suicide, available resources for help, and community action steps. The board unanimously approved the proclamation, marking a significant step towards addressing mental health challenges in the region.
In other meeting discussions, officials reviewed upcoming events, including a grand opening for the Frasini building, which will house public and social services departments, further emphasizing the county's commitment to community welfare.
