In a recent meeting of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), several correctional officers were honored for their extraordinary acts of bravery and dedication to public safety. Director Bobby Lumpkin introduced the recipients, beginning with Officer Russell Epperson from the James V. Reid Unit. Epperson was commended for his quick response during an incident where an inmate attempted to assault a fellow officer. Next, Officer Guy Pig from the Bill Clemens Unit was recognized for his heroic efforts during the recent wildfires in Texas. Pig utilized his agricultural equipment to create firebreaks, protecting homes and businesses in his community from the advancing flames. His selfless actions were celebrated as a testament to his commitment to both his agency and the community.
Officer Cody Kabler from the TL Roach Unit was also honored for his quick thinking during an inmate escape attempt. While stationed in a perimeter tower, Kabler alerted his colleagues and took action to prevent the escape, showcasing his dedication to maintaining safety within the facility.
The meeting also acknowledged the TDCJ's newly formed crisis response teams, which include a crisis negotiation team and a tactical response team. These teams have undergone extensive training to prepare for high-risk scenarios, including riots and hostage situations. Their recent participation in a mock prison riot skills competition in West Virginia highlighted their operational readiness and commitment to public safety.
Additionally, Marvin Dunbar was recognized for his 35 years of service to the TDCJ. His extensive career has included various leadership roles, contributing to the agency's oversight and operational integrity.
