In a recent government meeting, members of the Newburyport Black History Initiative presented their ongoing efforts to highlight and preserve the African American history of Newburyport and the broader New England region. The initiative, launched in February 2022, aims to correct historical narratives and ensure that the contributions of Black residents are recognized and celebrated.

Cabria Baumgartner, an associate professor of history at Northeastern University, emphasized the importance of their work in expanding upon the efforts of previous historians. The initiative has focused on public history projects, including the installation of interpretive signs that honor the stories of Black neighborhoods and individuals who have historically been overlooked. Baumgartner noted that their mission is not only about preservation but also about promoting racial justice and inclusivity.

The team, which includes Baumgartner, Cynthia Rashke, and Jordy Vining, has successfully unveiled several signs, with a total of 11 planned for installation. The first sign, dedicated to a historic Black neighborhood that no longer exists, garnered significant community interest, with over 100 attendees at its unveiling. However, the initiative has faced challenges, including an incident of vandalism targeting one of the signs, which was deemed racially motivated.

Vining, a senior project manager for the city, highlighted the initiative's commitment to centering the narratives of Black Newburyport residents, contrasting their approach with previous historical accounts that often focused on white figures. The team has also engaged the community through tours and lectures, aiming to foster a deeper understanding of the local Black history.

One of the upcoming signs will honor Black soldiers from the Civil War and World War II, showcasing the contributions of local residents who served in these conflicts. The initiative continues to gather research and community input to ensure that the stories of Black individuals in Newburyport are accurately represented and accessible to the public.
