During a recent city council meeting, community member Tanner Ott presented an ambitious proposal for the Colt Greenway, a planned 3.5-mile trail that aims to transform an old rail corridor into a vibrant pedestrian and cycling pathway. The project, which received overwhelming support from local citizens following a 2021 park sales tax renewal, seeks to connect downtown Columbia to Brown Station Road, enhancing safety and accessibility for residents and visitors alike.
Ott emphasized the historical significance of the Colt rail line, which once linked Columbia to major industrial hubs. He highlighted the ongoing revitalization of the North Village Arts District, where new businesses, restaurants, and public art installations have emerged, creating a cultural hotspot. The proposed Colt Greenway would extend this artistic momentum, featuring landscaping, artwork, and rest areas, ultimately fostering a stronger community connection.
In addition to the Colt Greenway discussion, the council held a public hearing regarding the proposed annexation of a property at the northwest corner of Brown School Road and Highway 763. Community Development Director Tim Teddy outlined the details of the annexation, which encompasses over 18 acres and is intended to accommodate a mixed-use corridor, including a future humane society facility. The zoning change from single-family residential to mixed-use commercial received unanimous support from the planning and zoning commission.
The council is expected to consider the annexation ordinance at their upcoming meeting on August 5, with the potential for further development in the area, including infrastructure improvements to address past flooding concerns. The discussions reflect a broader commitment to enhancing community spaces and accommodating growth in Columbia.
