Community leader calls for support to end senior hunger

During a recent town council meeting, community leaders and residents gathered to discuss pressing local issues, beginning with a heartfelt invocation that emphasized the importance of safety for law enforcement, firefighters, and first responders. The prayer also highlighted the upcoming school year, calling for blessings on children and educators who shape the future.

The meeting transitioned to the public comment section, where Jim Girard, president of White Mountain Meals on Wheels, addressed the council. He passionately advocated for support of the local Meals on Wheels program, which delivers an average of 71 meals daily to seniors in the community. Girard noted that the program, which has served over 30,000 seniors in the past year, relies heavily on funding from NACOG, covering 90% of costs, while the remaining 10% must be raised through donations.

Girard requested a $5,000 donation from the town to sustain the program, emphasizing that the initiative goes beyond meal delivery; it fosters connections and care for seniors. He underscored the critical role of the delivery drivers, who not only provide food but also check in on the well-being of the elderly recipients.

The council welcomed public input, reminding attendees that discussions during this segment are limited by open meeting laws, and individual comments are capped at three minutes. The meeting underscored the town's commitment to addressing community needs and supporting its vulnerable populations.
