A section of the heritage trail, specifically from John Street to Tanktown Road, is temporarily closing due to ongoing road construction projects. This segment, which opened just a few years ago, is affected by improvements to the 485 and John Street intersection, a project managed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Construction crews require access to the trail area, making it unsafe to keep it open during the road work.
In the future, a new road construction project will extend Greylock Ridge across John Street, which will include a multi-use path alongside the road. While this will replace the current trail, it aims to enhance connectivity in the area. To accommodate pedestrians during the closure, pedestrian beacons will be relocated to Clearbrook, allowing safe crossings at John Street. Users will need to navigate through nearby neighborhoods or use sidewalks to reach their destinations.
Officials emphasized that this closure is a temporary setback and not indicative of a reduction in greenways or trails. The new road project, funded through state bonus allocation dollars, will ultimately improve access to the Cressdale neighborhood and other areas, enhancing both road and trail connectivity for the community.
