Mayor Sylvester Turner highlighted the alarming statistics surrounding gun safety, noting that firearms are the leading cause of death for children in the United States. He referenced a study indicating that three in four children aged five to 14 living in homes with firearms know where the guns are stored, and over 20% have handled them without parental knowledge. The mayor also pointed out Houston's troubling record of road rage incidents involving firearms and the rising number of stolen guns from vehicles.

Lock Arms for Life, founded in 2018 after the tragic death of founder Lisa Ross's son, has been pivotal in promoting safe storage practices. The organization is currently distributing 6,800 firearm locks through community events and hospitals, partnering with local law enforcement to enhance safety measures in schools and public gatherings.

The meeting underscored the importance of education and resources in preventing gun-related accidents and deaths. With an estimated 4.6 million minors living in homes with unlocked firearms, officials stressed that even modest improvements in safe storage could significantly reduce youth gun deaths. The proclamation aims to raise awareness and encourage responsible gun ownership throughout the city and beyond.
