The discussion highlighted the proactive measures taken by sworn personnel, who have visited nearly all public and charter schools to familiarize themselves with campus layouts ahead of the upcoming school year. Notably, the only school yet to be visited is Franklin Academy, which is scheduled for a walkthrough this week.

The School Resource Officers (SROs) and their supervisor recently attended the Florida Association of School Resource Officers (FASRO) and National Association of School Resource Officers (NaSRO) conferences, funded through grants. These conferences focus on best practices for ensuring student safety and fostering positive relationships between officers and students. The knowledge gained from these events is expected to enhance the effectiveness of SROs in the upcoming school year.

Additionally, the meeting addressed the ongoing implementation of a citywide school traffic management plan introduced in July 2022. Officials reported progress in improving traffic flow and safety at various schools, including Pioneer Middle School and Griffin Elementary. However, challenges remain, particularly at Embassy Creek Elementary, where infrastructure issues complicate efforts to alleviate traffic congestion.

To address these challenges, officials proposed pursuing the Florida Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School (SRTS) grant. This initiative would require engineered plans to demonstrate how improvements could be made to Southeast Lake Boulevard, a key area of concern. The city manager expressed the need for consensus from the mayor and commissioners to engage a traffic consultant and apply for the grant, which is expected to be launched in August.
