During a recent government meeting, Amber Bonner, the Education Commissioner for the Utah PTA, raised significant concerns regarding student data privacy and legislative matters affecting local education agencies (LEAs).
Bonner expressed her apprehension about proposals that would allow the sharing of student contact information with charter schools, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding personal data. She highlighted that parents, including herself, did not consent to have their children's information distributed for marketing purposes, stressing the need for strict protections around sensitive data such as addresses and contact details.
Additionally, Bonner addressed the implications of Senate Bill 86, which pertains to lease revenue bonds critical for funding in rapidly growing districts like Alpine, Wasatch, and Granite. She noted that these bonds are essential for districts to address unforeseen enrollment surges and other unique challenges. Bonner urged the board to consider requesting a veto from the governor on SB 86, citing opposition from key educational organizations, including the USBA, UEA, and PTA.
The meeting also featured Laurel Fetzer, who joined via Zoom, contributing to discussions on positive initiatives within the education system. The board's engagement with these pressing issues underscores the ongoing dialogue about the balance between educational growth and the protection of student privacy.
