In a recent meeting, the Utah State Board of Education highlighted the significant impact of the Professional Outreach Program in the Schools (POPs), which has been a cornerstone of arts education in Utah for over 50 years. The program, supported by a budget of $6.175 million, aims to provide free access to professional arts organizations for Utah's public schools, reaching an impressive 86% of schools statewide.
The POPs initiative connects students with professional artists across various disciplines, including dance, theater, music, and visual arts. This unique program, which operates with a one-to-one funding match from participating organizations, has served over 473,000 students and trained more than 28,000 teachers in the past school year alone.
During the meeting, representatives from various arts organizations discussed their tailored offerings, which cater to the diverse needs of schools. These include workshops, performances, and in-depth residencies that enhance the educational experience while aligning with Utah's core art standards. The program's flexibility allows local education agencies (LEAs) to select from a catalog of services that best fit their community's goals and interests.
Pam Gee, director of Utah Opera for Children, shared insights into ongoing initiatives, including collaborations with schools to create original operas and community art projects. These efforts not only enrich students' artistic education but also foster cultural expression and community engagement.
The board expressed gratitude for the legislative support that sustains the POPs program, emphasizing its vital role in nurturing Utah's rich cultural and artistic landscape. As the program continues to evolve, it remains a testament to the state's commitment to providing comprehensive arts education for all students.
