In a recent presentation, Checkerspot, a biotechnology company, showcased its innovative approach to oil production using microalgae. The company emphasized that microalgae are the original oil producers, from which all higher oil-producing plants have evolved. This unique method involves fermenting sugar to feed microalgae, which then accumulate oil instead of alcohol, as yeast would in traditional fermentation processes.
The process is described as efficient and transparent, taking only a few days from fermentation to oil extraction. Checkerspot highlighted its ability to produce tailored oils for various applications, including food products and sustainable materials. Currently, their oils are featured in seven restaurants across the Bay Area, with plans for nationwide distribution through partnerships like the Algae Cooking Club.
Additionally, the company is exploring the use of its algae-derived oils in the production of new plastics and materials, aiming to replace petroleum-based finishes in clothing. This on-demand production model positions Checkerspot at the forefront of sustainable oil manufacturing, aligning with growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly alternatives.
