During a recent government meeting, officials provided an exciting update on the Ash Park expansion project, highlighting significant developments and future plans for the area. Kevin, the project lead, introduced Aaron Hollis, an intern from Appalachian State University, who has been actively involved in the project.

The expansion, initiated after receiving a $500,000 PARTF grant in fall 2022, has transformed Ash Park from approximately 70 acres to nearly 220 acres. The funds were used to acquire 149 acres of land, where new recreational amenities are being developed. These include a picnic shelter, an adventure playground, a bike skills course, and multi-use trails designed to enhance community engagement and outdoor activities.

The picnic shelter, capable of accommodating around a dozen picnic tables, is nearing completion, with picnic tables expected to be installed shortly. The adventure playground features various structures, including a slide, swing set, and a treehouse, all crafted from sustainable materials.

The bike skills course, designed for both experienced riders and younger children, will include features like jumps and a pump track. Officials emphasized that the expansion will not interfere with existing amenities, such as the popular disc golf course, which has attracted visitors from across the country and spurred local business growth.

Aaron Hollis presented plans for a new trail system, which will include three trails of varying difficulty levels, ensuring accessibility for all community members. The trails will be marked with color-coded signs to indicate their difficulty and will include features for future expansion.

Additionally, discussions included the potential for educational markers along the trails to inform visitors about local flora and fauna, enhancing the educational aspect of the park. The meeting concluded with enthusiasm for the project’s progress and a commitment to creating a welcoming and engaging environment for the community.
