In a recent government meeting, plans for a new mixed-use development, the Belhaven Hotel, were presented, sparking excitement among local officials and community members. The proposed hotel, located at the prime intersection of Rehoboth Avenue and the boardwalk, aims to feature 92 guest rooms, a 2,700 square foot ballroom, and approximately 20,000 square feet of retail space on the ground level.
Mister Follette, the project architect, emphasized the hotel’s design as a tribute to the historic Belhaven Hotel, which was destroyed by a storm in 1962. The new structure is designed to blend seamlessly with the community, featuring a green tile roof and a setback that aligns with urban design guidelines, creating a more inviting streetscape.
The development will include 94 underground parking spaces, addressing local concerns about parking availability in the busy area. Follette highlighted the importance of retail shops, stating that none would exceed 15,000 square feet, ensuring a vibrant shopping experience along the boardwalk.
Commissioners raised questions regarding the signage for the hotel, particularly about compliance with local codes and potential lighting options. Follette assured that all signage would adhere to regulations, and discussions about lighting would continue as tenants are secured.
The project has been in development for seven years, with Follette expressing gratitude for the collaborative efforts with the planning commission, which he believes have enhanced the project’s quality. The next steps include obtaining site plan approval, followed by detailed construction plans and necessary permits.
Overall, the Belhaven Hotel project represents a significant investment in the community, promising to revitalize the area while honoring its historical roots.
