In a recent government meeting, officials discussed ongoing traffic improvements around local schools, highlighting both successes and areas needing further attention. Since the start of the school year, significant progress has been made in managing car rider traffic, with afternoon clearances improving to around 2:40 PM at several sites. However, challenges remain, particularly at Audubon and Farnsley schools, where additional paving and adjustments are being considered.
The meeting revealed that construction on Brownsboro Road is exacerbating traffic issues, particularly affecting bus lanes and creating congestion. To address these challenges, law enforcement officers have been deployed to assist with traffic flow both on school property and on surrounding streets. This initiative, while outside the typical jurisdiction of the police, was deemed necessary due to a lack of available resources.
Officials emphasized the importance of collaboration with community agencies to develop effective traffic management solutions. The process for requesting traffic guards was clarified, noting that schools must submit written requests and undergo an analysis before the LMPD can allocate resources.
Despite the traffic concerns, it was noted that only 24 out of approximately 155 schools experienced transportation disruptions, and many traffic issues reported were not related to bus changes. The meeting concluded with a call for feedback from school principals to further refine traffic management strategies as the school year progresses.
