During a recent government meeting, Kenna Matthews, the Community Services Manager for the city of Orem, outlined plans to enhance the city's neglected properties through the establishment of community gardens. Matthews highlighted that the city owns approximately 900 pieces of property, many of which are not being adequately maintained. This initiative aims to beautify these areas while also engaging the community.
Matthews, alongside Tyler, a colleague from the city, discussed the challenges of maintaining city properties and the potential benefits of transforming some of these spaces into community gardens. The idea emerged from an innovation group composed of employees from various departments, who are tasked with addressing the city's struggles and proposing solutions.
The beautification committee was informed of this initiative, which aligns with their goal of maintaining the city's aesthetic appeal. Matthews mentioned a planned tour with the city council on August 22, where further discussions about the community gardens will take place.
To provide additional insights, Matthews invited Hillary Whitaker from Community Action Services, who has experience running community garden programs in neighboring cities. Whitaker is expected to present on the logistics and community involvement necessary for the success of this initiative.
The meeting underscored a collaborative effort to revitalize underutilized city properties while fostering community engagement and beautification efforts.
