During a recent government meeting, the Sandy City Council celebrated the achievements of local arts, particularly highlighting the contributions of music director Joel Rosenberg, who has led the community orchestra for 30 years. Rosenberg was honored with the Governors Mention Artist Award last November, recognizing his positive impact on the arts in Utah. Mayor Monica Sultansky and Governor Cox were present at the award ceremony, where Rosenberg also performed, showcasing his talent as a viola player.

The council expressed gratitude for the dedication of the musicians, many of whom have been with the orchestra since its inception. They emphasized the importance of community engagement, noting that the orchestra adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic by performing outdoors in parks. The orchestra rehearses weekly at the Sandy Recreation Center, which also serves as a storage space for instruments and music.

Council members praised the orchestra's performances, describing the quality of music produced by what they referred to as \"amateur\" musicians as exceptional. They encouraged residents to attend the upcoming free concert on July 6 at the amphitheater, which will honor veterans and feature the Sandy Fire Department presenting the colors.

In addition to recognizing Rosenberg, the council congratulated Charlotte Jordan for receiving the Arts and Culture Leadership Award. The mayor noted the increasing diversity in concert attendees, particularly families and young people, since the introduction of free concerts, highlighting the ripple effect of supporting local arts.

The meeting concluded with a presentation acknowledging Jordan's contributions to the community's cultural landscape, as well as a farewell gesture for her upcoming retirement from her role as chair of the symphony, although she will remain active on the board.
