During a recent government meeting, newly elected members of the Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling board were provided with a comprehensive recap of the organization's performance in 2023. The review highlighted the significant volume of waste managed by the service, which caters to approximately 85,000 customers across various cities.
In total, the organization collected 111,162 tons of trash destined for landfills throughout the year. This figure starkly contrasts with the amount of curbside recycling collected, which totaled only 19,155 tons—representing just 17% of the trash volume. Additionally, the board reported that green waste accounted for 5,808 tons, or about 5% of the total trash collected.
The discussions underscored the ongoing challenges in waste management, particularly the disparity between trash and recycling volumes, prompting council members to consider strategies for improving recycling efforts in the region.
