During a recent government meeting, the accomplishments of three young women from the Youth Community Outreach Program (YCOP) in Mount Vernon were celebrated, highlighting their achievements in a competitive STEM program. Under the guidance of Dr. Diane Williams and Marvin Church, these young ladies, aged 14 to 17, participated in a rigorous training program that culminated in a competition at the Yonkers Library, where they secured first place among eight competing groups.
Following this success, the YCOP team was invited to the Greenlight Competition Award in Bedford Hills, where they represented their community as the only participants of color among 17 other school-based programs. Although they did not place in the top three, their performance was praised for its professionalism and dedication, with community members expressing pride in their representation of Mount Vernon.
Director Wilson emphasized the unique challenges faced by the participants, noting that they met every Saturday for several hours via Zoom to prepare for the competition, contrasting with the more structured schedules of traditional school programs. This commitment showcased their determination and ability to excel despite limited preparation time.
The meeting also featured remarks from Marvin Church, who expressed optimism about the future of the program, indicating plans for national expansion. One of the young participants shared her experience, reflecting on the challenges and nerves faced during the project but ultimately expressing pride in their efforts and the hope for future success.
The community's support for these young women was evident, with calls for recognition of their hard work and achievements, reinforcing the importance of youth engagement in STEM fields.
